Vince Tells Stone Cold The Difference Between Attitude Era And Current Wrestlers

During Stone Cold's podcast with Vince McMahon this week, the pair got discussing what makes today's WWE different from the Attitude Era. Now while many of us lament the PGness of it all, McMahon has some strong opinions about the kind of wrestlers in his company nowadays.

The conversation between himself and Austin was a revealing one:

Austin:

There’s just a different feel in the locker room. There’s really no other options than the WWE out there to make a living. It seems to me guys and gals backstage are walking on eggshells…. They’re a little afraid to go out on a limb because there really is no other option. If they piss somebody off here, well then, there goes their career.

McMahon:

Well, don’t piss anybody off…. this is a different group of guys and gals. It’s millennials. They’re not as ambitious, quite frankly, and they’re not trepidatious at all – I just don’t think they want to reach for that brass ring. The last person who really reached for that brass ring in all likelihood was John Cena. Now there are others coming up now who definitely want to reach for it. [Dean] Ambrose is one of them, Seth Rollins is another one. Roman Reigns is another one. Bray [Wyatt] is another one. So I think you’ve got some people here who are chomping at the bit to make a difference but when you’re walking around backstage you don’t hear as much camaraderie or laughing as much as in your era.

Speaking of wrestlers who tried to reach for the brass ring, McMahon also publicly apologised for firing CM Punk on his wedding day:

I would like to do this. I would like to apologize. Sometimes in a big corporation, the legal people don’t necessarily know what talent relations are doing and conversely, and Punk got his severance papers on the day he got married. And that was coincidence. I want to personally apologize for that.

He also revealed that he was the one who made the call about the Brock Lesnar beating the Undertaker at Wrestlemania.
