The new NHL season starts next week but the Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs decided to release all their tension early with a 10-man brawl during a pre-season match last night.

It starts innocuously enough but quickly descends into chaos, with both goalies eventually squaring off in shameful scenes.

The NHL authorities will be delighted to know that their newly introduced helmet rule is working, as most of the players kept their helmets on.

According to Puck Daddy - who have written an FAQ on the fight - the fight resulted in a total of 211 penalty minutes, including three game misconducts.

Phil Kessel received a match penalty for slashing (seen at the start of the fight) while new Leafs signing David Clarkson gets an automatic 10-match ban for leaving the bench to join the fight.
