The last few Olympic games have followed a similar pattern for the Irish team. Great displays in boxing and maybe one or two other bright sparks if we're lucky. To say Irish Athletics is in a fallow period isn't accurate, even the great famine was shorter than Ireland's current wait for another track and field medal. A reason often given for Ireland's lack of success in the sport is the lack of quality facilities in the country. Hopefully the new indoor track at Athlone IT will change that.
This looks a seriously impressive track which can only help athletes in Ireland achieve higher standards. Hopefully it is made available to the top level of athletes to hone their skills. And this new track is a massive improvement on the current one in Nenagh which Eamonn Coghlan aptly named "a cow shed".
