'UCC From The Depths Of Hell' - Irish 4x400m Relay Takes Drama To Extraordinary Level

The Irish Universities Athletics Association's track and field championships took place at Morton Stadium over the weekend.

The women's 4 x 400m final featured ridiculous, over-the-top drama which even an Eastenders' script writer would balk at penning.

As the race entered the final leg, UCD held a healthy 30m lead. It appeared to be unassailable. Nevertheless, their advantage would not endure.

On the back straight, UL and CIT both began to close in on the leader. However, UCC would come out of nowhere to win it. They were actually fifth going into the final leg.

The commentator's exclamation of 'UCC from the depths of hell' is particularly apt.

Phil Healy was the hero for UCC. Bar that face-plant once she crossed the line, it's a race she will never want to forget.

Healy was undoubtedly channeling the spirit of John Treacy versus Steve Ovett in 1980 with her never-give-up mentality.
