Villanova won the 4x1500m relay at the Penn Relays on Friday and an Irish woman was key to victory.

Siofra Buttner, who is from Dublin, anchored the Villanova team.

With 200m left in the race, four athletes, including Buttner were tightly bunched. It was then that the second year Villanova athlete made her move.

Going into the race Villanova coach Gina Procaccio knew that if the other three members of the team could get the Irish athlete into contention, then the win would be theirs.

All I told the freshmen was to somehow put Siofra in the race and I knew she could get it done. I told (Siofra), ‘Just remember you can outkick anyone. Just remember that.’ It’s nice that it went to plan.

Buttner was also confident going into the race.

I didn’t have a doubt in my mind that we could get this done today. I watched every other girl give it their all, give their heart and guts to each leg, and I knew I wasn’t going to give that up.
