Michael O'Reilly has admitted in a statement this evening that he unintentionally took a supplement which contained a prohibited substance.
Marty Morrissey revealed the contents of the statement on RTE's Olympic coverage this evening.
The most significant portion of the statement was where he revealed that he had been given the supplement by 'someone unrelated to his team or association'.
The test was conducted before he headed for Rio. He was told he had failed the test last Thursday, the day the story was broken by the Irish Examiner.
It was suggested by some sources at the time that the banned substance he'd taken was recreational. It has subsequently emerged that this was not true.
He apologised to his fellow boxers, the IABA, Sport Ireland and the Olympic Council of Ireland.
He is heading home. There will be no appeal.

Mr. O'Reilly received notification that an adverse had been made against him. The adverse finding arises out of a matter which was not deliberate or intentional.
Having received further information, Mr. O'Reilly now freely admits that he unintentionally took a supplement that may have contained a prohibited substance. Mr. O'Reilly was given this supplement by someone unrelated to his team or association. Michael O'Reilly disclosed, at the time of the test, that he had taken the supplement.
Mr. O'Reilly offers his sincere apology to his fellow boxers, his team mates, the Irish Athletic Boxing Association, Sport Ireland, the Olympic Council of Ireland and all those who have supported him.
