Learning to accept defeat in Kilkenny is like learning how to react when you win in Dublin.. a strange unnerving feeling.

Ken
Fuck, it’s over for Ken McGrath. Thanks for the memories: the point above, the free from 100 yards out against Cork in ’06 that fell about a foot short (viewable around the 6.00 mark here), and most of all for me, a sort of flying backhanded catch in the ’07 quarterfinal replay that reminded me of Willie Mays at the Pologrounds.
He was yin to Dan, Mullane and Eoin Kelly’s yang. Can’t believe he’s only 33. He’s going out like Jesus.
Sean Og And The Sports Geeks
Aren’t all sports hacks supposed to be fat and balding? Here’s Sean Og, with a scarf knot once described to me as the ‘UCD Knot’ being interviewed by the sports nerds today. TV3 say he’s adjusting to life away from the senior intercounty hurling.
GAA Technology Fail
What on earth are the GAA at? Reports from the Examiner today say that the GAA will introduce the Hawk-Eye technology used in Wimbeldon in the All-Ireland Club Finals on St. Patrick’s Day. Talk about not seeing the forest for the trees. Every Championship there are one or two contested points which prove decisive, and yes, it’s a practical that the GAA implement technology to reduce such errors.
BUT.
Would Hawk-Eye technology would have reversed Benny Coulter’s square-ball goal which cost Kildare the All-Ireland final?
Would Hawk-Eye technology have reversed Joe Sheridan’s goal which broke so many hearts in Louth?
If the GAA insists on sending out subpar referees, what it clearly needs is video replay. The Gardai is already using video replay to identify Martin Sludden’s attackers. Hawk-Eye technology will add a hint of intrigue to the club championships, but the GAA is still failing to address the much bigger problem at the core of how the sport is officiated.
Westmeath for Liam McCarthy

I was reading about Declan Meehan’s career on RTE.ie and stumbled upon a pretty ridiculous poll asking readers opinions on who they think will win Liam McCarthy in 2011. It’s not so much that the question is ridiculous, just that in the interest of objectivity, RTE has listed most of the counties that play hurling in Ireland, when we all know that one of about three team (the same 3 teams as every year) have a chance. Feeling mischievous, I voted for Westmeath. Imagine my shock to learn that nearly 16% of readers had voted for Westmeath, which made them third favourite, ahead of Cork, Waterford and Galway.
Now either Westmeath are about to unleash 15 Shefflin cousins this season or bored readers on RTE.ie are conspiring to subvert the RTE sports department. We view this as a noble campaign and encourage anyone looking to subvert RTE sports to follow this link to vote for Westmeath. Democracy in action.
They Are Calling It The O’Muircheartaigh Effect

With Micheal O’Muircheartaigh seat still warm in Montrose, the GAA have signalled the end of the national broadcasters dominant position in the holding of radio commentary rights. With Matt Cooper doing his best to tone down the effect years and years in South Dublin has had on him on TV3, the same will be asked of the boys at Newstalk.
Somewhere right now Micheal is turning his computer monitor off, scalding the tea-pot and having a good oul laugh to himself..
