Judge Alexandra Simmons told Danny Simpson that his account of what happened on December 29th of last year was "unworthy of belief".

Police officers had arrived at the home of Simpson's ex-girlfriend Stephanie Ward to find the Leicester City player strangling her.

Simpson, who plead not guilty to charges, recollected the night thusly:

Like any relationship, we had our problems but we got on the best we could.

And it was nice being together as a family again and our daughter had a nice time.

It was an argument over nothing, about me messaging someone years ago.

I never grabbed hold of her at any time.

I was getting more and confused as I didn’t know why she was saying that (‘get off me’).

The next thing I knew, I had been taken down.

PC Gareth Hughes had a different view of events saying that as he approached the house he could hear "someone gasping for breath and struggling to breath" and upon entering saw Simpson "straddling her with his hands firmly around her throat".

The two, who have a child together, have been involved in an on-again/off-again relationship for a number of years and were apparently arguing over Simpson texting another woman.

Audio was played to the court of an emergency services call during which Ward could be heard shouting "get off me".

The case, which could result in the player receiving a prison sentence, was adjourned until the end of next month.

Simpson has played for a number of sides, including Newcastle, QPR and current club Leicester, since leaving Manchester United in 2010.
