It's not the kind of story that we've come to expect over the past couple of weeks but an Irish fan is currently in jail in France after an assault with an unidentified weapon in Paris, two days after Ireland's 1-1 draw with Sweden.

The Herald are today reporting that David Hunt, a 35 year old Irish fan from Balinteer, who is thought to have been in France supporting Ireland with friends, was sentenced to eight months in prison on June 17th, two days after the armed assault took place in Gare du Nord train station near the centre of Paris.

Although it's not something we're overly used to in the Irish justice system, the prompt nature of the sentencing is in line with other incidents during Euro 2016 which saw English and Russian fans jailed a matter of days after unsavoury scenes in Marseille and Lille during the opening week of the tournament.

A source close to the Irish fan in question told the Herald that 'it's like lockdown' in France with little information coming out about the nature of the sentencing. However, a spokesperson for the court service in Paris denied that this was the case.

In terms of a conviction for a violent crime, this is believed to be an isolated incident when it comes to Irish fans at Euro 2016. However, coming on the back of Irish fans being awarded a medal by the city of Paris for their sportsmanship, even an isolated incident like this is something that no Irish fan will have wanted to hear about.
