Juan Mata said he was told of Manchester United's extensive rebuilding plans when he joined the club in January 2014.

The Spanish World Cup winner signed for United for a then club-record fee of £37.1m from Chelsea, since then Angel Di Maria's £59.7m transfer has become a Premier League record.

Louis Van Gaal continued his spending spree with the acquisitions of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin and Mata said "I knew the club was going to have these kind of signings".

Mata has claimed that when he signed for the Red Devils he was told "you are very important, you are one of the first".

Manchester United have spent a huge total of £228.1m on ten players since Mata's arrival, and that does not include Radamel Falcao's £6m loan, while Victor Valdes was brought in on a free transfer.

However Mata conceded that the huge money spending won't solely be enough to win a first trophy since Sir Alex Ferguson left Old Trafford.

We know there is still a lot of work to do.

It's not just about bringing good players in. It's about playing well and winning trophies.

It's unlikely that last week's double signing will be the end of Manchester United's transfer business, Nicolas Otamendi, Sergio Ramos and Edison Cavani are still heavily linked with a switch to Old Trafford.
