Martin O'Neill's Odds Have Been Slashed For Surprise Return To The Premier League

A run of seven consecutive league games without a win for Everton came to an end at the weekend with a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth.

The knives were out for Roberto Martinez before the game and they have yet to be put back in their sheaths.

It seems inevitable that Martinez will depart Goodison Park this summer. After a tremendous first season under the Spaniard, where they finished fifth, Everton have failed to progress. Last season, 11th was their final position and they are destined for a similar one once this season comes to a conclusion.

Everton fans had been hopeful of Manuel Pellegrini, the man heading out the door at Manchester City, being their next manager.

In recent days, a new, unexpected favourite emerged for the job with bookie Bet Victor. Martin O'Neill's odds tumbled down to 6/4 to be Martinez's replacement. Previously, he had been as big as 40/1 for the job. He is now above Ronald Koeman, Pellegrini and David Moyes in the betting.

O'Neill is out of contract with the FAI once the European Championships ends and it does not look as though he will sign a new deal before Ireland head to France. The 64-year-old met with FAI Chief Executive John Delaney last week regarding his contract though no news was forthcoming about the meeting.

Nottingham Forest were also recently linked with a move for O'Neill.
