England Look To France For New Manager After Southgate Rules Himself Out

The fallout from England's ignominious Euro 2016 exit continues and it shows no sign of coming to an end any time soon. As long as there's a lack of anyone willing to take the job vacated by Roy Hodgson on Monday night, then we can all continue to take quite a bit of joy out of the shitshow that is English FA and their noble quest for World Cup glory in 2022.

The latest news this morning is that, despite seeming like a bit of a yes man, Gareth Southgate has actually said no to his current employers. The England u21 boss was widely tipped to be taking over the senior setup on an interim basis at the very least. However, the former Middlesbrough defender has taken the highly commendable step of letting the poisoned chalice pass him by, leaving the FA with a rather tough job of trying to throw money at someone to steer the unsteerable ship in the right direction.

The fact that Glenn 'short back and sides' Hoddle, is genuinely in the running is all anyone really needs to know about how tough a job awaits the English FA. The Telegraph put it rather well this morning;

Gareth Southgate has delivered an embarrassing blow to the Football Association by making it be known that he is not prepared to take over as England manager even on an interim basis.

In other words, when you can't even get Gareth Southgate to take over, you know you're in trouble.

There is however, a possible light on the horizon for England and it;s coming from across the channel tunnel. After Fabio Capello left, it was all about the need to go English. Now it would appear that it really doesn't matter. Laurent Blanc is the latest name to be heavily linked with the England job in the press this morning.

Blanc has recently been replaced as manager of PSG by Unai Emery and The Independent are this morning reporting that he could yet be a serious contender to guide England towards Russia 2018. Alongside Blanc, Jurgen Klinsmann is still being mentioned but really, we all just want to see what would happen if Hoddle was given the job again. Make it happen England, you know it's the right thing to do.
