Paul Scholes Isn't Impressed With David De Gea Amid Real Madrid Rumours

While Manchester United easily dispatched of Club Brugge last night in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League qualifier, all the talk was about Wayne Rooney, who bagged a hat-trick to end his goal drought at the start of the new season.

After everyone had finished debating if Rooney could do the same against Swansea on Sunday, TV pundits had to find something else to talk about, and as Eamon Dunphy was calling Louis Van Gaal a "spoofer" and a "bullshitter" on RTÉ, two former Manchester United players were tackling a big issue that still looms over the club as we approach the transfer deadline, the David De Gea situation.

At the moment it seems as though De Gea will be staying at Old Trafford, as talk of a Real Madrid bid has gone quiet, but you would have to expect another move from Real, and this is why Van Gaal is not playing the Spaniard and is picking new signing Sergio Romero instead.

Paul Scholes is not a fan of this, as if David De Gea's head has been turned by Madrid as Van Gaal claims, then that is unacceptable in his view.

How can you lose focus?

That’s the thing for me. He is getting paid by this club, it is a brilliant club. They paid a lot of money on a young keeper to give him this chance. If the manager is right and says he has lost focus then yeah, I think he is out of order.

He should be in that team playing. If it wasn’t for him last year, they probably wouldn’t be in this position tonight so they have to thank him for that.

Sitting beside Scholes was his old United teammate Rio Ferdinand, and his view is more in support of the manager's decision than putting the blame on De Gea.

I think it sets the tone. I think it tells players you can get out of this club easy. No you can’t. If we want you stay and you are one of our better players then you will stay here and play under our conditions. That sets the tone.

It is disappointing to see it get to this stage. It has become a bit tit-for-tat, there is a lot going on behind the scenes we can’t explain because we don’t know, but you’ve got to play him.

That's a safe opinion from Ferdinand, as he's both praised Van Gaal's decision to drop him, and suggested that he should be playing in the same sentence. Clearly he isn't trying to upset anyone, unlike Scholes who just says what he thinks.

I know which pundit I would rather hear from in that case.
