It seems Memphis Depay will not suffice in terms of wide player recruitment for Manchester United.

Several newspapers, including the Guardian, Telegraph and Times, are reporting that United made an enquiry to Liverpool this week regarding Raheem Sterling.

News broke on Monday night that the forward would reiterate to Brendan Rodgers his desire to leave Anfield and Louis van Gaal's side have apparently tried to take advantage of his unrest. According to Andy Hunter of the Guardian the Old Trafford club were willing to offer Sterling up to £150k a week.

Liverpool immediately dismissed United advances, directing his suitors Sterling was not for sale and, say the Times, let it be known any further enquiries would also be swiftly turned down.

Apart from Man Utd, Man City, Arsenal and a number of European clubs were also said to be interested in the 20-year-old's signature. When asked about the signing him yesterday, Arsene Wenger was coy on the possibility.

The last player to move directly between the two clubs was Phil Chisnall in 1964. He moved from to Anfield from Old Trafford.

Many Liverpool fans have been keen so see Sterling leave the club following news of his unrest but how they would feel about him joining Manchester United is another thing.
