Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has expressed his disappointment at the behaviour of wantaway winger Raheem Sterling, comparing his attitude to that of new Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson.

“Raheem and Jordan are at different ends of the scale,” he told BBC Sport. “Jordan’s so professional, he’s a winner, a great lad.

Henderson replaces Gerrard as captain at Anfield, meanwhile Sterling didn't turn up for the beginning of Liverpool's preseason training, citing illness as the reason.

Some have viewed Sterling's 'sickie' as an attempt to push through a proposed move to Manchester City amid claims that the 20-year-old has refused to join the Liverpool squad on their preseason tour of Asia and Australia.

Gerrard continued:

Jordan’s been loyal to the club by signing a new deal and I wish him well.

I don’t think there’s a more fitting player to take that armband off me.

Gerrard was less than happy with the actions of Sterling:

It’s very difficult for me to sit here and support him and the team around him

It’s slightly disappointing how far the situation has gone — but the only way I can see for him is out at the moment.

Gerrard's assessment comes when Manchester City are expected to make a third bid for Sterling which will move closer to Liverpool's £50m valuation of the England international.

If it happens it'll be the end to the biggest transfer saga of the Summer so far, and Sterling can buy new toys to throw out of his pram with all that money he's not moving for.
