The Comical Richard Wright Stat That Proves Just How Ridiculous The Money In Football Is

Richard Wright has become the butt of a recurring joke in modern football as after leaving Ipswich in 2010 he disappeared off the face of the Earth.

Or rather, he devoted his life to being a backup goalkeeper, which has seen many poke fun at him for accepting that he is being used purely for training purposes, but having seen what he has earned in his last four years at Manchester City, there are few that will criticise his career choices.

Wright joined City in 2012 and has never played a single game. For four years he has been City's 3rd/4th choice goalkeeper as others who play the same position have come and gone. He has, however, managed to secure around £4m in wages over that time, a ridiculous fact made even more ridiculous when you consider that Wright has only played three football matches this decade, and has lost all three.

We featured Richard Wright in our '12 Unfortunate Souls Who Were Born To Be Backup Goalkeepers', but there is nothing unfortunate about that amount of money.

It's utterly insane that Manchester City can afford to have him on their books for so long while offering absolutely nothing in terms of actually playing football, but then again the club is so rich that they may simply just not have noticed.

In fact, is Wright living the dream?

He's played football at the top level, he's done it before, so now he has to train, stay in shape, and earn a staggering amount of money with absolute none of the pressure that comes with being a Premier League footballer.

His contract is up this summer, and it remains to be seen whether or not he will attempt to actually play football from now on, or if it is time to hang up his gloves as no club will pay him near what he was on at City.
