For supporters, football is usually transient - weekly escapsim from the drudgery of work - it can occasionally has the capabilities to be transcendent.

This story from two fans on the opposing sides of the Merseyside divide is an example.

Last month we had this edifying story of a Liverpool pledging his derby tickets to a young, disabled Everton fan who had been subject to abhorrent abuse at Manchester City.

This is a similarly charming tale from England's north-west.

A Liverpool fan befriended a homeless Everton fan named Darren whom he met on the street, and rather than waste money on Christmas presents he decided to take the latter to a game at Goodison.

Darren is now back on his feet and living in a flat in Liverpool.
