VIDEO: The Surreal Moment When Aston Villa's Leandro Bacuna Appeared On The Rose Of Tralee

In future, for the sake of their Roses, the Rose of Tralee should confine it's sporting references to hearty predictions about whose county is going to win the All-Ireland this year.

This conservative policy has served the Tralee extravaganza well for many years now.

For instance, earlier this evening, the Galway Rose gratefully took her opportunity to engage in some 'banter' at the expense of the Tipperary Rose. It was some proper old style sledging.

Critics will naturally say that such unmanly behaviour is unworthy of the Rose of Tralee. But blushes were spared.

Elsewhere tonight, the Rose of Tralee journeyed into a deeply exotic territory during Daithi's chat with Germany Rose, Birmingham born but Dublin reared, Roisin Ni Mathuna.

A massive Aston Villa fan, the charming Roisin was bowled over when the FA Cup, a piece of silverware which, many have surely noted, is as alien to Villa Park as it is to Tralee, was wheeled out onstage behind her.

Not only that, they then screened a video message from none other than Aston Villa full back Leandro Bacuna.

It was Leandro Bacuna's first appearance of Rose of Tralee.

It became apparent that Roisin did not who Bacuna was.

We have some sympathy for Roisin here. Not knowing who Leandro Bacuna is is not usually fatal to a prospective Rose of Tralee's chances. Indeed, we're not convinced that the eventual winner, Meath's Elysha Brennan, was any better briefed on Bacuna's identity.

Not being a Villa fan, I can't even be sure it counts as a grievous fault in an Aston Villa fan. Surely sense should have prevailed and they should just have wheeled out Paul McGrath.
