Friday April 28 marks 100 years since the original Wembley Stadium was opened in London, in 1923. After watching this footage, we think it's definitely time we look at reigniting the old tradition of Gaelic football in Wembley.

Though better known for its history with English soccer, plenty of other major events have taken place at the iconic stadium over the years, from NFL overseas games to mega-concerts from the world's biggest acts.

And, in years gone by, even the GAA paid visits to north-west London and Wembley Stadium.

Wembley: Terrific footage of 1970s exhibition games

This terrific video from British Movietone in 2015 captures extraordinary footage of Dublin and Kerry's clash in a 1976 exhibition game at the stadium, which the Dubs won 0-10 to 0-7. The standard wasn't brilliant but the crowd in attendance seemed no less enthralled.

This clash was one of around 26 matches played at Wembley during the 1960s and 1970s.

Since the emergence of the Dublin v Kerry footage in 2015, more has surfaced online of even older games.

This grainy British Pathé footage captures the 1961 exhibition between Kerry and Down - with the narrator noting the game had "all the aggression of soccer, rugger, and prize fighting - but what the rules are, you'd have to ask an Irishman."

If you're looking for a bit of GAA trivia to impress people with today, you can inform them that Patsy O'Hagan of Down was the first ever GAA player to score a hat-trick in Wembley. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
