Two time All-Ireland winning Dublin footballer Ger Brennan announced his retirement from inter-county football yesterday following a series of persistent injuries which kept him out of contention for a place in Jim Gavin's side this season.

The St Vincent's defender released a statement saying that playing for Dublin was fulfilling a 'boyhood dream' and remarked on the 'life-long bonds and friendships' he developed with the rest of the panel throughout his career.

But now it seems that Brennan also has some criticisms to dish out for his former colleagues. Speaking on the Anton Savage show on Tuesday, the Vincent's man made a couple of cutting comments about some Dublin players for allowing themselves to get distracted by the media.

Each and every one of the players were geared towards achieving but the way some of them went about it I didn't like, particularly in my early years coming into the panel. I thought maybe there was an imbalance of media exposure says the man who's in here.

When Savage asked him if perhaps there were some players who couldn't walk by a microphone, Brennan replied:

Basically there was yes so that kind of got in on me. I thought their mental energy, which you need to succeed at the top level, should have been put in to the football.

Brennan, who made his debut for Dublin in 2007, has been suffering from injuries since 2013. There were faint hopes that he would make a comeback this season but decided to take time out in July before conceding to retirement yesterday. He is currently nursing some problems with his achilles tendon and will continue to play club football for St Vincent's.
