Writing in his capacity as both a Star columnist and a former Galway hurling manager, Ger Loughnane is strongly of the view that the Galway manager's job should come with a health warning.

No team in hurling is on the end of more stinging rebukes than the Galway senior hurlers. Even their own former players have little problem castigating the current generation.

This weekend, the pejoratives have been flying around.

In forcing a revolt against their manager a month after losing the All-Ireland final, they have been accused of having no balls and taking 'the cowardly route out'.

In his column, which can be read in the Star, Loughnane writes that the Galway players 'didn't deliver when the pressure came on. Blaming the manager is a pathetic cop-out'.

After two abject seasons, Loughnane was ousted as Galway manager in 2008. 'Player power' was mentioned as of the factors. Perhaps recalling this experience, Loughnane suggested that an older clique within the squad are prominent among the rebels.

There are a group of older players there who have been involved with the county team for a long time. They're always looking for instant solutions. It wouldn't surprise me if this group are at the forefront of the uprising.

Most interestingly, Loughnane referred to the vicious club rivalries that exist within Galway, saying that it makes it hard to foster unity among the players. He said he saw this first hand during his time, alluding to a challenge match between Portumna and a rest of Galway selection, in which one of the players roared at half time, 'we have to put down those Tipperary bastards!'.

'Even the way they spoke about each other in such derogatory terms was striking', Loughnane wrote.

Throughout the column, Loughnane said Galway had 'plenty of players who talk the talk' but wouldn't walk the walk.

Also piling on is Daithi Regan, who marked himself out as a noted critic of the current Galway crop before the All-Ireland semi-final against Tipperary.

In a series of tweets, Regan said that the Galway players had 'shit themselves' in the second half and effectively said that they didn't have the balls to win the All-Ireland this year. Replying to other tweeters, he said it was the same 'gobshite excuse every year' and remarked that 'men win All-Irelands... men like Lynskey.'
