Today we're asking you to name the best Meath footballer since 1980. Meath football has gone through various transformations in the past thirty five years. They began the '80s in the doldrums, losing twice in the championship to Longford in 1982 and 1984.
Then they emerged in 1986 winning the Leinster title and two successive All-Ireland titles in the following years. They lost two successive finals in 1990 and 1991. Despite the final defeat, the latter year was possibly the most memorable season in Meath history, involving a four game saga with Dublin, narrow wins against Wicklow and Roscommon and late rally against Down in the All-Ireland final.
They had a number of fallow years following the heroics of 1991 as a large number of the 80s side departed the scene. They re-grouped and came with a phalanx of new stars plus a couple of older statesmen to win All-Irelands in 96 and 99.
Since the surprising final loss to Galway in 2001, they have usually lain low. The names in the poll probably reflect this history.
