Corofin's mildly surprising loss in the Connacht Final has opened the way for Stephen Rochford to take over the Mayo footballers. His appointment is to be rubber-stamped in the coming days.

He comes to the job armed with a formidable backroom team.

He is to retain highly regarded coach Donie Buckley as well as strength and conditioning trainer Barry Solan (who also works for Arsenal). Gavin Duffy will now assist with the strength and conditioning coaching. Former Limerick manager Maurice Horan will be involved in video analysis.

In addition to these appointments, he has added two selectors. A Foxford teacher and prolific trainer of schools teams, Sean Carey, has been added to the set-up.

The most high profile appointment is that of a Crossmaglen legend. Tony McEntee, the double All-Ireland winning club manager with Cross and a much feted analyst is to join Carey as a selector.

McEntee has managed St. Brigid's in Dublin for the past two seasons.

Here is a fine example of his insight on the Sunday Game.
