Michael Darragh Macauley has never been your average Gaelic footballer. There has always been plenty of coverage of how his first love is really basketball and the fact he has, you know, other hobbies outside football. But on independent.ie today he offers some nice perspective, particularly given the furore there has been around Gaelic football over the last month.
When asked about whether he'd be upset if he doesn't start against Mayo on Sunday, MacAuley said:
I know how important football is and how important football should be. It is just a game at the end of the day.
We put a whole lot into it but there are real-world events that happen all the time that will take you back down to earth and make you realise that you are just kicking a ball around a field at the end of the day.
The midfielder also told a story about how he went to a Libertines gig the Friday night before the 2010 final, before heading into Temple Bar (sober) and meeting Scottie Pippen, 'I was raging I didn't offer him a ticket to the match, I'm sure he would have known about it. Would he? I'm sick I didn't offer him a ticket.'
If ever there was player who walks to the beat of their own drum.
