Racists in England often contend that people who were born and grew up in the United Kingdom are not British, despite the just protestations of those abused in this way. The situation with BBC sports commentators and Irish sportspeople is roughly the opposite. They are mad to fasten them to their bosom and claim them as one of their own.

Yesterday, former Ryder Cup captain Mark James outraged the easily outraged by carelessly mis-identifying Paul Dunne as British. Throughout the day, Dunne's Irishness was much flagged and his home of Greystones was frequently name-checked yet this harmless faux-pas from James soured all that in the eyes of many.

Apparently news of the 'controversy' reached him. In his stint in the commentary box today, he addressed that controversy.

I called him British yesterday and someone took exception. He's Irish but we like to be inclusive at the BBC
