Just Shut It All Down - McGregor Vs Mayweather Nonsense Takes Things A Step Too Far

Stop the sporting world because it's about time we all get off. At this moment in time, we're not entirely sure if it's the sporting media that just needs to stop or if it's simply the nonsense that is going on in the respective camps of Conor McGregor and/or Floyd Mayweather but someone, somewhere needs to take step back and just think about the implication of their actions.

The Sun are today reporting a world exclusive that 'Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor on the verge of agreeing a billion dollar mega-fight'. Pull the other leg should be your first thought when you read something like that but according to the report, this is all legit and all that's left is for both sides to agree on the purse and then put pen to paper on a fight that would seemingly earn Mayweather £100 million and McGregor just £7 million.

The report quotes an unnamed source, presumably from the Mayweather side of things, who has stated that the former P4P boxing king had enough of McGregor's lip and was ready to take him down a few notches. The two main stipulations to that are that it will be purely a boxing contest and McGregor will have to lose somewhere in the region of 25lb to get down to the 147lb welterweight limit.

According to the source;

It was agreed in principle on May 2, but Floyd wouldn’t reveal the identity of his opponent until last night when he told friends he’ll be fighting Conor.

Let's breakdown the options here.

Recommended

(a) Someone is simply taking the piss and the Sun decided to run with it because it's hilarious.

(b) The desire for both of these individuals to stay in the news cycle is such that they're just blatantly making stuff up for attention.

(c) This is legit.

The first of those would be the preferred option. The second one reflects well on no one but it's probably not surprising and it's just a case of feeding something to the media to ensure that interest is kept ticking along until McGregor gets his next fight or Mayweather announces his inevitable comeback and 50th fight.

However, on the off chance that this is legit, it will be very sorry day for the once noble sport of boxing. Don't get us wrong, it would be absolutely enthralling to watch and the entire world would go to town on it, but if there's any sanity left in the world, no sanctioning body could even think of signing off on this.

The money would no doubt be ludicrous but just think of what we're talking about here. This is quite possibly one of the most refined and effective boxers in the history of the sport, taking on someone who's an Irish club level boxer.

No chance. We're willing to be proven wrong but this is bolloxology of the highest order and everyone involved should just come out and distance themselves from it immediately.
