Joe Schmidt was coyly diplomatic on Saturday when he was asked about Warren Gatland's latest volley at Ireland's style of play.

Gatland is incapable of giving a bland answer to questions concerning Ireland and critiqued their play as 'narrow' and said they 'don't play a whole lot of rugby'. On Saturday, Schmidt insisted that this was merely Gatland's perception and he was entitled to his own perception.

Today, however, the Irish coach expanded a bit. And it turns out Schmidt doesn't regard Gatland's comments on Ireland's narrowness as being wholly without merit.

We need to get some cohesion. We were described as narrow and we probably were at times.

We certainly ran out of width in our attack, although we could have scored twice in the opening 10 minutes with some pretty good width in our attack which obviously might have be overlooked.

Hopefully, Ireland may open up and play a bit more enterprising rugby during the competition proper.
