O'Connell, who appeared on Today With Sean O'Rourke on RTÉ, told the presenter that he is currently working on the memoir of his career.

The book will be ghostwritten by Alan English - editor of The Limerick Leader and the man who took over from Paul Kimmage as ghostwriter for Brian O'Driscoll's autobiography.

It's due out in October and according to Michael McLoughlin, MD of Penguin Ireland, O'Connell has applied the work ethic which served him so well on the pitch to its creation.

He was a fantastic sporting ambassador for Ireland both on and off the pitch. Together with Alan English, he has applied his legendary professionalism to the creation of what will be the must-read book for 2016.
