Paul O'Connell made an appearance on Ireland AM on Wednesday as part of the launch of Three's Christmas campaign. The move to France is in full swing and although the kids are finding school a bit of an adjustment, the family seem to be settling in well. And while that's all well and good, the World Cup still needed to be talked about.
O'Connell was inevitably asked about his final match in an Ireland jersey where he suffered the hamstring injury that had the country talking. The former Ireland captain was asked whether he thought that match against France would be his last.
I didn't really, you can get injured at any point in any rugby match, I probably should have thought that [I could have] but that's not the right way to be thinking.
In terms of a performance and in terms of the occasion it was it probably wasn't a bad way to go out
O'Connell was then asked whether he felt cheated over the injury, which he was quick to refute, citing the recent retirement of former team mate Felix Jones at the age of just 28.
No not at all, there's plenty of guys who get injured, I was lucky to have a very long career. Felix Jones is a very good friend of mine at Munster, he's only 28 years of age and I think he's a fantastic player. He unfortunately had to retire three or four weeks ago, so I think I've been very lucky.
Away from his injury O'Connell was talking about Ireland's chances going forward as well as his new life in Toulon. He refused to rule out a return to the Irish setup in the future saying that his time in France will put him in a good position as to whether or not he'll be suited to coaching in the future.
