Many's the full life has been lived between the years of 1908 and 2016. Plenty of Chicago Cubs fans lived their entire lives without seeing e'er a World Series being won.
The World Series was won too late for these people. In their honour, Cubs fans have been scrawling the names of passed-on relatives on the Sheffield Wall of Wrigley Field.
The wall bears the message 'For all the Cubs fans who didn't get a next year'. It is now decorated with the names of ardent Cubs fans who never witnessed their team winning the World Series.

Even European sports fans who wouldn't know a base on balls from a strikeout, and who might even accidentally utter the idiot phrase 'World Series Final', were sucked in by the romance of Cubs' triumph. They cheered along with Bill Murray and took note of Hillary Clinton's delight.

Obama, another Chicago native, is a White Sox fan - they won the World Series in 2005 - and thus wasn't as wrapped up in the quest.
He held back from tweeting something to the effect of "Pity to see the Scum finally win the World Series tonight. Thank God I'll be out of here before that shit arrive in the White House."
No, he came over gracious instead.
