The traditional opening game of the season is traditionally a feeding ground for the newly crowned Superbowl champions. Only twice since the concept began in 2002, has the defending champions lost the Thursday night game that opens the season.

Last night in Foxborough, it was the turn of the New England Patriots to flex their muscles. Four touchdowns for Brady, and three for Gronk was enough to see off the Steelers despite a garbage time TD for their star receiver Antonio Brown putting some gloss on the scoreline.

Brady was the star of the night, as he broke one big record in the NFL. Last night was his 161st win in the NFL, which now takes him ahead of Brett Favre as the quarterback with the most wins in NFL history. As Americans would say, he's the most 'winningest' quarterback of all time.

It's quite an achievement for the sixth round pick from 2001, and is a testament to his longevity and competitiveness.

Here's a list of other notable stats from the game:

  • Brady is now tied 4th in NFL history for all-time touchdown passes on 396.
  • His run of 19 straight complete passes during last night's game is a Patriots franchise record.
  • Antonio Brown continued his insane streak of at least five catches and 50 yards into a 34th straight game.

It was an impressive first hit-out for the Patriots, but can they continue this run and repeat?
