Vince Wilfork is one of the most colourful players to grace an NFL field in recent years.

The 13-year veteran has announced his retirement in an unusual way - by inviting fans to a tailgate party to celebrate his career.

Wilfork spent 11 seasons with the New England Patriots (where he won two Super Bowls) before moving to Houston. He spent his final two years with the Texans. Fittingly Wilfork's final game was in New England, where the Texans were eliminated from last year's playoffs.

Wilfork was one of the bigger men in the NFL, and he had no issue throwing his weight around in the defensive line.

A lover of barbecued and grilled meat, Wilfork revealed his retirement in an ad for a company that specialises in cooking meats.

"No more cleats, I'm moving on to smoked meats, fella", Wilfork proclaimed in his own unique style. "Peace out! I'm out of here. Later!"

Wilfork's retirement tailgate party will be in New England on September 7th. What else is on that day? The Patriots are at home to Kansas City Chiefs on the opening day of the season.

It's could be a late one for fans of Wilfork.
