Jimmy Gressier comfortably won the European U23 cross country title in the Netherlands on Sunday morning.

The front-running Frenchman defended his title in a time of 23:37, eight seconds ahead of German, Samuel Fitwi. Ireland's Ryan Forsyth finished fourth, 12 seconds behind the victor.

It was Gressier's celebration which had everyone talking.

His win all but secured, Gressier grabbed two French flags from spectators along the course. In muddy conditions at the Beekse Bergen Safari Park in Tilburg, he attempted to knee slide over the line. It did not go to plan.

While the conditions may not have been ideal for running, they were pretty much perfect for knee sliding. He can have no excuses.

To his credit, Gressier took the mishap with a smile.
