Katie Taylor's proposed homecoming in Dublin is off the cards with the WBA lightweight champion set to fight at the Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York on 28 April.
The42 has reported that Taylor will fight on the Daniel Jacobs’ undercard in April. It was thought that a homecoming bout was next after Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed 14 April in Dublin was in the works. That is no longer on the cards. The preferred opponent remains Victoria Bustos for a unification fight.
Taylor's representatives had hoped 2018 was the year that she could penetrate the US boxing market. It appears that project will begin in April.
In a recent interview with Balls.ie, Taylor's coach Ross Enamait said Taylor had plenty of options in terms of opponents:
I think they’re saying April, it would obviously be nice to get another belt. One of the nice things is at Katie’s weight there are plenty of fights out there. At other weight classes she wouldn’t have as many opponents, but there is plenty of girls for Katie to fight. She won’t run out of fights anytime soon.
You’ve got Chantelle Cameron , (Mikaela) Mayer. There is a lot of girls coming up that will make for exciting fights.
Despite her amateur pedigree, Enamait explained Taylor has not yet made it into the American consciousness.
I didn’t know much about her, in Amerca, you wouldn’t typically hear it. The amateurs don’t get nearly as much exposure. Now I know how much attention she gets there (In Ireland.) Even Shields in America is now getting some attention, but she won two gold medals and most people don’t know who she is.
Katie Taylor has appeared at the venue before when she enjoyed a comprehensive third-round stoppage against American Jasmine Clarkson.
