Boxer Scott Westgarth Dies Following Weekend Fight In Doncaster

Boxer Scott Westgarth has died at the age of 31, it was confirmed on Monday morning.

On Saturday night, Westgarth fought to a points victory over ten rounds against Dec Spellman at the Doncaster Dome.

After the bout, the Newcastle fighter was taken to hospital. Shortly beforehand, Westgarth had appeared to be in pain during a post-fight interview.

Promoter Stefy Bull broke the news via Twitter.


Opponent Dec Spellman wrote on Twitter of his devastation regarding the news. "Absolutely heartbroken and lost for words ail continue to pray for Scott's family and the people close to him rest easy my friend."

Westgarth, a light heavyweight, was 7-2-1 in his pro career. Saturday night's fight was a title eliminator for the English light heavyweight title

Several other fighters and boxing figures have expressed their sadness at the tragedy. Those included Curtis Woodhouse who was due to headline on Saturday night against Wayne Hibbert. However, the fight was canceled due to Westgarth being taken to hospital.
