By his own admission, Conor O'Malley did not have the best of games for Peterborough on Tuesday night. The Westport goalkeeper conceded four goals in 90 minutes as his side drew 4-4 with Bradford in their FA Cup second round replay.
He made up for it in the penalty shootout which followed a goalless extra-time, saving three penalties.
"I felt I had to make up for the game because my it wasn’t the best," the 24-year-old told the Peterborough YouTube channel.
My decision-making wasn’t up to where it normally is. Normally I’m good at sweeping and that, but I made a few stupid decisions. My handling was alright and I was happy enough in the main, but it was just a few moments of madness.
But to save three penalties is a great feeling and to get through to the next round, I couldn’t be happier.
With Tyles [Goalkeeping coach, Mark Tyler] we always do our homework. We looked at all the different penalties, in the shootout especially against Aldershot.
It worked very well today, at least. It's always a help when Tyles and Sean have the information. You can be confident that you know where they're going.
The game was just O'Malley's fourth appearance of the season.
Due to a league rule which requires at least one player developed by the club to be in the matchday squad, O'Malley has been unable to take a place on the bench for the majority of the League One season.
Instead, 41-year-old goalkeeping coach, Mark Tyler - who played for 15 years with the club before moving to Luton in 2009 - has been the backup to Aaron Chapman.
"It's been tough," said O'Malley.
"To be honest with you, I didn't understand it at first because, to be honest with you, it was a bit of a shock.
"It probably makes sense if we can get six good outfield players. The amount of times the keeper comes off the bench is minuscule. It is what it is. It's not great for me but it's probably great for the team."
