Watch: Graeme Souness Went To Town On 'Pathetic' PSG Performance
Barely had the question left Tommy Martin's lips during TV3's post-match coverage of PSG and Real Madrid's Champions League last-16 game on Tuesday evening when Graeme Souness had launched the artillery.
There was a real anger to the Scot's tone as he addressed a poor PSG effort. It was one of a man who felt his evening had been wasted watching a team who seemed to care about the game less than he did.
"They were pathetic; never looked like putting a dent in Real Madrid at all," said Souness.
"This is a collection of big players. You look at the names on the teamsheet, big players who cost a lot of money. You know, we know, names on teamsheets don't win you football matches. They were bang average tonight."
Souness's theory as to why PSG underperformed: the poor week-to-week competition they face in Ligue 1. Though he seems to think otherwise, Real Madrid also face their fair share of underfunded opposition in La Liga.
My overriding thoughts on this game tonight: This is a team [Real Madrid] that plays in a proper league, the Spanish league, would have to be bang at it because it's Real Madrid, everyone plays against them like it's a cup final. So, they don't get any easy games.
Against a team playing very much in a second league where they don't have to be at their best to win games. Some of them just strolled through that game. At the highest level, you have to sprint back when you lose the ball - you don't jobg back. You have a never say die attitude if you want to win this big trophy.
They played as if, 'Oh there'll be another night for us' and they got the manager the sack tonight. Pathetic.
