Ahead of today's Merseyside derby, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has hailed Everton's Seamus Coleman for his donation to the fund for Liverpool fan Sean Cox.

The Irish captain made a €5,000 donation to a fundraising effort for his fellow Irishman earlier this year. At the time Coleman explained he did so after he saw reports that Klopp had a donation of his own.

We have to be together. I think football is great for sticking together. Rivalries go out the window with stuff like that; you don’t see a crest or a jersey, you see a man who came to support his team and unfortunately it didn’t end too well for him that night.

Writing in his pre-match programme notes, Klopp opened by thanking Coleman for the gesture.

"I'd like to start these notes by thanking Seamus Coleman for the solidarity he has shown in supporting Sean Cox as he continues his long road to recovery from the injury he so tragically sustained while visiting Liverpool from Ireland to support our club in a football match.

"I know Seamus embodies the Everton spirit of wanting to beat LFC on the pitch as much as any player they have, but his actions to help the Cox family demonstrates what the best qualities of the rivalry are."

Klopp went on to cite the occasions that the clubs have stood together: "Whether it be Hillsborough, donations to foodbanks or individual situations- like the serious human struggles which Sean and his family are facing- Everton and Liverpool stand shoulder-to-shoulder when it really matters."
