The chairman of the Liam Miller Tribute committee, Michael O'Flynn, has hailed the 'driving influence' former Man United boss Alex Ferguson played in organising today's tribute match.

Former Manchester United, Celtic and Ireland players have descended on Cork today to pay tribute to Liam Miller, with all proceeds going towards going towards the Liam Miller Fund. Speaking to MUTV before the game, O'Flynn praised the role of Alex Ferguson in making it happen.

Sir Alex was key in this happening. The work, the contact I had with him for weeks afterward teed up the whole event. Up to the time he got ill, he was the driving force on the Man United side. Roy Keane then took over the mantle of player/manager. Sir Alex has been back in contact in the last three or four weeks. He is hugely interested in it. In fact, I spoke to him this morning.

Writing in the programme notes, Alex Ferguson explained he could not attend as "circumstances and advice from those who know better than I decreed I stay put" but paid tribute to the "wonderful young lad, with humility and manners" that was Liam Miller.
