For those who wish to see Mauricio Pochettino become the next manager of Manchester United - and those include Gary Neville - the signs are good.

The Times reports this morning that the Argentinian 'wants to be considered' as the long-term successor to Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese was sacked on Tuesday after an underwhelming two-and-a-half years at the club. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was confirmed on Wednesday morning as interim manager until the end of the season.

Pochettino does have four-and-a-half years to run on his contract with Spurs. Earlier this year, he signed an extension which runs to 2023. The 46-year-old first took over at White Hart Lane in May 2014.

That means Man Utd would have to pay compensation to Spurs - £34 million is the figure mentioned.

It's said that Pochettino believes the Old Trafford job is 'too good to turn down' especially due to the financial constraints placed on him at Spurs which would not be in place at Man Utd.

Asked at a Spurs press conference on Tuesday about being linked with the job, Pochettino was coy but did not rule himself out.

"I think after nearly five years there are a lot of rumours that have happened in my position here, as manager of Tottenham," said Pochettino.

"I cannot answer this type of question. These type of rumours happen in this business, in football.

"I always respect the opinion of everyone, whether people praise me, whether people do not agree with me, whether people say different things. The business we know very well.

"A lot of rumours happen but it is not my business what happened at another club. I am so focused in trying to deliver my best job at this football club."
