It's been a day of shock and grief in Irish football following the passing of Liam Miller yesterday, lost to cancer at the age of just 36. But the Cork man's loss is being felt far beyond this country too, with his passing being grieved across English and Scottish football, and in particular with the clubs with whom he spent his career.

Earlier today, Celtic held an emotional minute's silence before their game with Partick Thistle, while Miller's former Manchester United teammates have offered sympathies and tributes throughout the day.

Now, the man who brought Miller from Celtic to Old Trafford, Alex Ferguson, has paid his own tribute to his former player.

I am very sad to hear that Liam has died.

He was a good professional, who served our club in an excellent manner. He was a quiet, unassuming young man and was popular with everyone at Carrington.

On behalf of all my staff who worked with Liam at the time, we send our deepest sympathy to his family.

The sentiments of his former manager have been echoed by so many in football throughout the day. Quiet, professional, and well liked.

Tomorrow, United will honour their former player in their game against Newcastle, with all of the players wearing black armbands. A club spokesperson announced:

Manchester United is extremely saddened to learn of the tragic death of our former midfielder Liam Miller. We extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones at this difficult time.

In memory of Liam, Manchester United players will wear black armbands during Sunday’s Premier League match against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
