We had to wait until last night for Roy Keane's thousand-yard stare in response to Manchester United's pathetic Champions League exit to Sevilla, as he joined Lee Dixon on the couch for ITV's Champions League show.

Keane has oft been critical of Jose Mourinho in the Portuguese's time in charge of Old Trafford, mischievously wondering last year if the club was "too big for him" after Mourinho moaned about United's fixture list amid their run to the Europa League final. When they won that trophy against Ajax, Mourinho instructed his players to hold up three fingers in the celebratory photographs, to signal the fact that they had completed a treble that season.

If they had done so, it was the Tesco Value Treble - the Carling Cup, the Europa League and the Community Shield. Keane referenced that moment in his answer to a question regarding Mourinho's post-match comments, in which he spoke of the times he had knocked United out of Europe in the past.

I wouldn't take too much notice of that stuff. He is going to try and defend the team a bit. The worry for me was last year, the manager was talking about winning three trophies last year. My goodness, the manager was including the Charity Shield as a major trophy. My God...you know you're in trouble.

This was greatly augmented by the revulsion on his face.

Keane, however, was also critical of the quality of player at Mourinho's disposal.

He knows they are short, we have seen that for the last three of four years. I know people say that isn't always the answer, but they are short three or four players and some of the players playing for Manchester United are not good enough. If they are selected for Manchester United they will play, but they are not good enough.
