As Real Madrid's season burned to a crisp against Ajax at the Bernabeu on Tuesday night, Sergio Ramos watched on helpless from the stands.
The Madrid centre-back was suspended for the Champions League last-16 second leg tie, an occurrence which he had deliberately caused.
Late in his side's 2-1 first leg win over the Dutch side, Ramos was booked. The card took him over the disciplinary threshold meaning that he would be suspended for the second leg but would have a clean slate for the remainder of a tournament he prematurely thought Madrid would be in.
In a post-match interview following that first leg, Ramos admitted, "Looking at the result, I'd be lying if I said I didn't force [the booking]."
"It is not to underestimate the opponent nor to think that the series is over, but in football you have to make tough decisions," added Ramos.
He later attempted to backtrack on the comments but, ultimately, UEFA had heard enough. The one-match suspension was upped to a two-match ban for purposefully getting booked.
Ramos's gamble last night backfired on him even louder as Ajax stunned the Spanish side with a 4-1 win, KOing the reigning champions and their backseat passenger captain from the competition.
To make the schadenfreude even sweeter for some, Ramos was filming a documentary on Tuesday night. It was announced earlier this year that the 32-year-old was taking part in an eight-part series for Amazon Prime which would focus on his life on and off the pitch.
Marca report that cameras for the documentary were present in his personal box as he watched his side being crushed.
