Manchester United this morning officially confirmed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as interim manager of the club.

The club said in a statement:

Solskjær will take charge of the first team with immediate effect and will remain in place while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new full-time manager. He will be joined by Mike Phelan as first-team coach, working alongside Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna.

Solskjaer is manager of Norwegian side Molde. Earlier this month, he signed a three-year extension to his deal at the club. The Norwegian league is currently on a winter break following the end of the 2018 season. The 2019 season starts on March 31st.

Molde confirmed on Wednesday that Erling Moe will take over as their 'main trainer' during the period in which Solskjaer is with Man Utd.

"That Manchester United ask Molde FK to lend the manager is by itself an event, and not least a statement of trust for both Ole Gunnar and Molde FK," said Molde CEO, Øystein Neerland.

"This is a big opportunity for Molde FK, we think it will be developing and helping to put Molde FK further on the football card."

Solskjaer's first game in charge of Man Utd will be against Cardiff on Saturday evening. He was manager of Cardiff for nine months in 2014.

"Ole is a club legend with huge experience, both on the pitch and in coaching roles," said Man Utd executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward.

"His history at Manchester United means he lives and breathes the culture here and everyone at the club is delighted to have him and Mike Phelan back.

"We are confident they will unite the players and the fans as we head into the second half of the season."
