The most interesting tie of the third round in this year's Carabao Cup, Liverpool and Chelsea will both know that tonight's clash is potentially the toughest test they could face in this competition. Although Manchester City eased into the 4th round last night, Manchester United exited with something of a whimper. The first dose of domestic cup football for both of these sides this season, Liverpool and Chelsea have both started the season well thus far. Although the Carabao Cup will scarcely be a competition either side is determined to win, a victory against a close rival will be sought after nevertheless.

No club in English football has a better record in the Carabao Cup than Liverpool. Finalists on 12 occasions, Liverpool have won the League Cup 8 times. Most recently overcoming Cardiff City to claim the cup in 2011/12, it had been nine years since Liverpool last won.

First winning the League Cup in 1964/65, Chelsea have won the competitions four times since then; three of those arriving during the Roman Abramovich era. Notably the first trophy Jose Mourinho won while in charge of Chelsea initially, it was believed the win set a precedent that allowed the team to excel as they did.
