10 Of Manchester United's Most Inept Post-Ferguson Performances

We would love to say Manchester United were schooled today at Goodison Park, as Marco Silva's Everton butchered the Red Devils 4-0, but that would suggest that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's misfiring brats actually intended to learn a lesson.

Sorry, still a bit sore here.

United fans have had to stomach quite a few tart shots of reality since Alex Ferguson walked from Old Trafford into the sunset in May 2013. Today's performance lay squarely in such a category.

But just how high does it rank in the darkest of dark days the 13-time Premier League champions have experienced since Ferguson signed off with the title almost six years ago.

#10 - FC Midtylland (A) February 2016

A week prior to Marcus Rashford breaking on to the scene in the reverse victory at Old Trafford, United were well and truly humbled by the Danish minnows in front of less than 10,000 supporters at the MCH Arena.

Memphis Depay - remember him? - had put United ahead before Pione Sisto equalised on the stroke of half-time for the home side. The shock was completed when Paul Onuachu made a prick of most of United's defence before firing a scuffed shot past Sergio Romero.

#9 - West Ham (A) September 2018

In one of the worst performances of the Mourinho era, a United squad on the cusp of civil war as the Pogba v Mourinho ego war continued to rage travelled to London Stadium and went home licking their wounds after an awful performance.

Felipe Anderson put the host in front after 5 minutes, before Andriy Yarmolenko deflected shot beat David De Gea. Marcus Rashford offered United fans some hope in the second half, but Marko Arnautovic quickly snuffed that out as United went down 3-1

#8 Stoke City (A) December 2015

It was a winter of discontent at the Theatre of Dreams in 2015 as United failed to win any of their six December games. Home draws against West Ham and Chelsea bookended a run of four straight defeats as United went down to Wolfsburg, Bournemouth, Norwich, and finally Stoke in a god awful run.

Bojan Krkic capitalised on some comical United defending to put the Potters in front before that man Arnautovic doubled their lead before half-time in one of the aforementioned Depay's most miserable performances in a United shirt.

#7 Olympiacos (A) February 2014

Whilst things were going askew domestically, David Moyes did manage to go through his first Champions League group stage with relative ease as United qualified for the round of 16 unbeaten. Happy to have drawn Olympiacos in the last 16, United travelled to Greece hoping for no upsets.

But when Alejandro Dominguez stuck out his big toe to deflect a tame shot into the net in the 38th minute, you got the feeling it was going to be a Greek tragedy. To add insult to injury, Arsenal irritant and overall reject Joel Campbell curled in a second after the break.

#6 Spurs (H) August 2018

United's inaudacious start to this season saw them go down first to Brighton before a shock 3-0 reversal to Spurs at Old Trafford.

Mourinho's side were dreadfully wasteful in front of goal and were made to pay early in the second half as quick-fire goals from Harry Kane and Lucas Moura put Spurs in control. Moura would complete the rout five minutes from time.

#5 Manchester City (H) March 2014

Edin Dzeko bagged a brace - his first inside a minute of the start - as the noisy neighbours eased to a win on their fierce rivals home patch.

Yaya Toure would add a third in stoppage time as David Moyes' side succumbed. The defeat prompted the infamous 'Moyes Out' banner to be flown over Old Trafford a week later during the win over Aston Villa, as the Scot struggled to convince fans in his first season - or ever really.

#4 MK Dons (A) August 2014

United travelled to Stadium MK as Louis Van Gaal got a taste of League Cup football in charge of the Red Devils for the very first time.

Despite naming a youthful side, United should have had plenty about them to overcome their League One opponents. The reality was very, very different.

Will Grigg and Benik Afobe each grabbed braces as Karl Robinson's buccaneering fake Dons put the kids to the sword.

#3 Everton (A) April 2019

Today's abject performance was galling as a totally disinterested United were pillaged on their trip to Merseyside.

Everton were in complete control of proceedings and were probably unlucky not to win the game by more. Goals from Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Lucas Digne and Theo Walcott had Ole Solskjaer apologising to the fans at full-time and Gary Neville raging in the Sky Sports studio.

#2 Chelsea (A) October 2016

In another instance of being caught cold early doors, Pedro had Chelsea ahead after 30 seconds at a Stamford Bridge welcoming Jose Mourinho back for the first time in United red.

Any hope of the Portuguese manager claiming victory over his former employers was extinguished after Gary Cahill added a second after twenty minutes. Chris Smalling was acting the lig for that goal and after Hazard weaved through to make it three with half an hour to go, the dose was it again, having been turned inside out by N'Golo Kante.

That defeat came 5 years to the day after Man City trounced them 6-1 at Old Trafford.

#1 Liverpool (H) March 2014

How David Moyes survived two more months, never mind two minutes after the full-time whistle in this one is anyone's guess.

United fans - one very irate Balls.ie contributor included - were forced to endure an afternoon of horror as they crumbled at home to their biggest rivals.

Steven Gerrard scored two penalties and missed a third as Brendan Rodgers side ran amock all over Old Trafford. Nemanja Vidic picked up his final red card against Liverpool before Luis Suarez added a third late on.

Christ, David Moyes was shite.
