We're set for another Mayo and Galway clash this afternoon and, put simply, these guys straight up don't like each other. The build-up to this game was marked with a delightfully salty piece in the Mayo News, by Colin Sheridan.
Galway won the National Football League, becoming the first team in history to do it by actually losing the final to Dublin, by four points. A collective swooning of the national press followed. Hyperbole dripped from back pages and danced across the airwaves. Galway, the sleeping giant, are rubbing the sleep from their eyes!
You can picture Colm Boyle doing his handclap push-ups, newspaper clippings on the wall, holding his veins over the naked gas flame like Robert de Niro in Taxi Driver, listening to the Tribesman being lauded as the second coming of Kanye, repeating May 13th over and over again in his head.
Galway fans have been creative in crafting their own message to Mayo supporters, drawing inspiration from Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
In the film, Frances McDormand hires out three billboards to send a stark message to the local police force, seeking justice for her murdered daughter. These read "Raped While Dying", "And Still No Arrests", "How Come, Chief Willoughby?"
Galway fans have mimicked these messages for Mayo fans, and displayed them outside Breaffy so as to snaffle the attention of any Mayo fans heading for McHale Park.
