Conor McGregor, remember, that lad that used to fight in the UFC? Well, head of the UFC Dana White has today confirmed that the Crumlin native will be stripped of his lightweight title having not defended the belt in over a year.
McGregor hasn't fought in the UFC since claiming the lightweight belt against Eddie Alvarez in November 2016 and with the upcoming bout between Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov there have been calls for the Irish fighter to either defend or give up his belt.
Khabib and Tony face off April 7th headlining UFC 223 and White acknowledged that McGregor would be stripped of his belt before that fight takes place.
Speaking to TMZ, White was pressed on whether McGregor's situation and confirmed that Ferguson V Nurmagomedov would be for the undisputed lightweight title:
I said in the last press conference that fight will be for the title. It's not for the interim title.
Conor understands. Listen, Conor made a lot of money, y'know he wants some time off but the business has to go on and the division has to go on.
White spoke on any Mayweather McGregor rematch saying that "The only way a rematch makes sense if it's in the UFC but that the UFC were not We're not in active negotiation with Mayweather regarding any rematch.
White was hesitant to say when McGregor would grace the Octagon with his presence again and argued that we may never see the Notorious fight again:
It was August then September, I don't know.
I say it all the time, with that kind of money Conor might never come back.
