Sophie O'Sullivan is set to make her debut in the Irish vest after being selected for next month's European U-18 Athletics Championships in Hungary.

One of 23 athletes selected, O'Sullivan, the daughter of Ireland's Olympic silver-medalist Sonia, will be competing in the 800 metres.

Running out of Ballymore Cobh, O'Sullivan has competed successfully in both Ireland and Australia. Dividing her time between both countries, last year she became a simultaneous U-17 champion in the 800 and 1500 metres.

With O'Sullivan's mother coming from Ireland, and her father hailing from Australia, speculation as to which nation the young athlete would ideally represented abounded.

Although the frequency with which the IAAF process transfers of allegiance suggests that O'Sullivan could feasibly run for Australia in the future, next month will be her first in the Irish vest.

Sarah Healy is another Irish athlete set to compete in Hungary amid great expectations. At a track meeting in Germany last weekend, Healy ran 4:09.25 in the the 1500 metres - the second fastest ever time by a European under-18.

A run that also saw Healy smash her own Irish U-20 record, it was the tenth fastest time by any Irish athlete at this distance.
