Jiayu Yang won gold for China in the 20km race walk in London on Sunday afternoon.

Yang pulled away from small group also featuring Mexico's Maria Guadalupe Gonzalez and compatriot Xiuzhi Lyu with approximately 100m to the finish.

Yang and Gonzalez crossed the line in the gold and silver medal positions. Unable to keep pace with the other two Lyu - who won bronze at the Olympics last year and silver at the World Championships two years ago - must have been consoling with the third place finish. That was until an official stepped in to disqualify her just 20 metres from the line.

Two minutes earlier, the commentators had told us that a third red card for Lyu, for loss of contact with the ground, had appeared on their screen.

The disqualification of Lyu allowed Italian Antonella Palmisano to take the bronze medal. Palmisano had lost contact with the leading three two kilometres earlier as they started on their final lap.
